Strong Knees Program
Do you suffer from arthritis of the knee?
Corio Bay Health Group presents a series of exercise and learning sessions designed to achieve optimal strength, mobility and function for mild to moderately osteo-arthritic knees.
The program works strongly towards self-directed management of the problem and aims to give clients a better understanding of treatment options and their relevance. This includes exercises, medications, surgery, supplements and diet.
Structure of the Program
The program involves 2 x 60min sessions per week over a five week period (10 sessions in total) after which time each participant will have developed a very strong sense of an ability to self-manage their problem, as well as develop a resource bank of self-help and practitioner based solutions.
Program Aims
The specific aims of this program are to enable each participant;
- To have a comprehensive management strategy specifically to deal with the problem themselves where possible or appropriate.
- To better understand the disease process and impact of lifestyle, diet, medication and exercise factors
- To achieve an improved quality of life.
- To achieve improved pain levels.
- To be better equipped at self-coping with acute exacerbations
- To delay or avoid surgery.
- To understand the effects of common supplements and alternative remedies.
- To be empowered with an ongoing resource for their problem.
When does the Strong Knees Program operate?
We have run two groups so far in 2012, and our next course is coming up in July. Dates & session times will be as follows;
| Week 1 | Monday 2/7 Thursday 5/7 |
| Week 2 | Monday 9/7 Thursday 12/7 |
| Week 3 | Monday 16/7 Thursday 19/7 |
| Week 4 | Monday 23/7 Thursday 26/7 |
| Week 5 | Monday 30/7 Thursday 2/8 |
The Results
Results from our two groups have been excellent - all participants showing improvement in weight, range of movement, and showed an increased walking tolerance / distance: -
Average increase in Range of Movement: 18 degrees
Average improvement in stair climb test: 22%
Average increase in 6 Min walk distance: 46%
Average decrease in pain scale: 22%
Average improvement in function (KOOS): 19%
How much does it cost?
The program is $300 payable at your first session (ie. $30/class). Rebates do apply with most private health insurance funds - if you wish to find out whether you can apply for a rebate with your fund, simply phone them and ask how much you will get back for a 'Group Physiotherapy' session.
Once you have completed all classes we will provide a record of your attendance which you can then take to your fund to claim your rebate. Unfortunately you will not be able to claim back on sessions that you have missed, however in most instances we can slot you in to 'make up' sessions in future courses so that you can claim your rebate.
